Liverpool Keeper Unphased By Valdes Speculation

Liverpool’s number one Simon Mignolet appears to be unphased by indications that the Reds are looking to sign Victor Valdes on a free transfer.

The rumour of Victor Valdes coming to Merseyside has been doing the rounds for a while now but Mignolet told the Liverpool Echo that if you are at a big club one must accept these kind of rumours.

“If I had to look into all the players who are linked with Liverpool, then there would be another team on the pitch! Every week there would be a different 11 playing.

“If you play for a big club, you have to accept that is the way it is, but I don’t read anything into that. I am here to play my game and to do my best every week. I can only work hard in training, be positive and make sure I play well.”

As a team Liverpool have under performed in comparison to last season but Mignolet believes this is steadily improving.

“We’re not happy with some of the goals we’ve conceded in recent games, but we’ve worked hard on things. We want to do better and that showed against Everton.

“We worked on it during the week and I think it showed. Everyone was organised and spoke a lot with each other. Everyone was loud on the pitch and showed the authority that was asked of them. From that perspective, there were a lot of positives to take.”

There have been a few mistakes by the Belgium international, most notably when he was lobbed from a cross in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham. However, the team needs to accept responsibility for the majority of goals conceded as most of them have been down to defensive errors.

Valdes would definitely give Liverpool a keeper who has been tried and tested at the very highest level of both club and international football and his experience of playing in must-win games weekin week out for Barcelona could give him the edge over Mignolet if he is to come to Anfield.

For the time being it is of much more importance that The Reds focus on their defence as a whole rather than giving flack to their very last line. Mignolet has been at fault on certain occasions but as a team the Reds will need to step it up a notch if they want to build on last season’s success.
