Liverpool will be one £75m defender lighter at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with the news that Virgil van Dijk is set to miss the clash against Manchester City.
The Liverpool Echo have reported that the Dutch centre-back has a tightness in his hamstring, and thus will not be risked by manager Jurgen Klopp so as not to aggravate the injury.

The development will come as a massive blow for Liverpool, who some feel will provide the greatest thus far of Man City’s unbeaten league campaign, not to mention applying some retribution for the 5-0 thrashing the Reds suffered in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. The visitors have not tasted victory at Anfield since 2003 and their hopes of ending that run will undoubtedly be bolstered by Van Dijk’s absence.
The report goes on to suggest the Dejan Lovren, rather than Ragnar Klavan, will be selected to partner Joel Matip in the centre of Liverpool’s defence.
Van Dijk’s injury is not thought to be serious beyond this fixture, meaning he is now likely to make his Premier League debut against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium next Monday night.
The former Southampton man has already begun making his presence felt at his new club, putting in a fine showing and scoring the winner in last week’s FA Cup third round Merseyside derby.
