Liverpool fans don’t remember former striker Iago Aspas too fondly.
Brendan Rodgers signed the Spaniard in a £7.7m deal in 2013 in order to play a role in Liverpool’s challenge for the top four, and although the Reds exceeded expectations by challenging for the Premier League title, that was without much help from the Spanish forward.
Indeed, he is remembered more for the woeful corner he took against Chelsea in the dying seconds of the game that killed Liverpool’s title chances…

Since his return to Spain, however, things have improved dramatically for Aspas. A €5m return to Celta Vigo, after a year-log loan spell as Sevilla where he picked up a Europa League winners’ medal, has seen the 29-year-old back among the goals.
Indeed, his six in ten games in La Liga this season (the most of any Spanish player in the division) has been enough to convince Spanish national team manager Julen Lopetegui to call him up to the squad to replace the injured Diego Costa for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Macedonia and friendly international against England.

Naturally, Liverpool fans (among others) on social media are reacting well to the news that the forward who flopped badly at Anfield is on the cusp of becoming a Spanish international striker…

At this point it’s worth remembering that Aspas did indeed score one goal for the club in his only season at Anfield, in a 3-0 win against Oldham in January 2014.
