Speculation has been intensifying in recent days that Brazil native Alex Teixeira is to make his way to Merseyside and join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Today’s news suggests the deal is edging closer and closer though, after Sky Sports reported that the 26-year-old has informed Shakhtar Donetsk he wants to leave, however sources elsewhere suggest the Reds and the Ukrainian giants are still a considerable distance apart when it comes to valuation.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the Merseysiders have already tabled a £24.5 million bid for the attacking midfielder but the Miners are holding out for a deal nearing £38 million.
A fee that splits the difference would even be considered a huge amount of money for a player who has, as of yet, been untested in the Premier League. Teixeira’s record in Ukraine is quite impressive, however.
This season alone he has netted 22 goals in just 15 league games and a further three in Europe’s top competition, the Champions League.
While Ukrainian football may not be near the level of the English top flight, this is a considerable feat that cannot be ignored when taking into account the attributes of the former Brazil U-20 international.
With the January transfer window deadline fast approaching, Reds fans will be hopeful a deal can be agreed for a player who not only appears to have a major desire to play for the club but is also a proven goalscorer.
