Liverpool have shut down reports of their supposed interest in Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.
There had been some suggestions in the English media on Sunday morning that the Reds had been in discussions for the England under-21 international prior to Villa’s decision to sack director of football Steve Round, with a view to bringing him to Anfield.
However, the Liverpool Echo have since claimed that the Premier League club are baffled by reports linking the former Ireland youth international with a move, insisting that there is no basis for the rumours and that no discussions took place with Round or any other Villa representative.
Despite Liverpool’s lack of interest in Grealish, he is still expected to leave Villa Park this summer. Becuase of the club’s dire financial position, the Championship side are expected to accept a much lower than they otherwise would have, with reports that a £15m move to Tottenham could be in the offing before the transfer window closes.
Liverpool, for their part, are indeed looking to add reinforcements in the attacking midfield department. A £52m move for Lyon’s Nabil Fekir broke down last month, but manager Jurgen Klopp is also believed to be interested in bringing Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaiqiri to the club in a cut-price £13m deal.
