Legendary Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

It was confirmed on Friday that the former Scottish international, who won eight league titles and three European Cups in his playing and managerial spells at Anfield, was to be given the honour in recognition to his services to football.

Upon receiving the honour, Dalglish immediately dedicated it to fellow Liverpool greats Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly, as well as Celtic legend Jock Stein:

“All I can say from my own point of view is that I am definitely no more deserving of an accolade like this than Jock Stein, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley were.

“I am just fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and I would like to dedicate this honour to them because without the standards that they set at Glasgow Celtic and Liverpool, individuals like myself would not have been able to thrive as much as we did.”

Few personalities in the British game have contributed more than Dalglish, as either a player or manager. In addition to the above major honours, he also had great success in the cup competitions and won the Premier League title as manager of Blackburn Rovers in 1995.

Away from the pitch, Dalglish was – and continues to be – tireless in his support for the families affected by the Hillsborough disaster, and has helped raise vase sums of money for the Marina Dalglish Appeal.

“I would like to express my gratitude to those who nominated me for a knighthood.

“I don’t know exactly what the process is but obviously something like this couldn’t happen unless someone puts your name forward, so thank you to whoever it was who holds me in sufficient esteem that they believe me worthy of such an accolade. It is extremely humbling to have people who think of you in this way.”
