Liverpool left back Alberto Moreno is already having a hard summer.

A horror show in the Europa League final against his old side Sevilla, omission from Spain’s Euro 2016 squad (not that he has been in contention recently), and a fresh media report almost every day that he is to be replaced in the Liverpool side.

Jonas Hector, Ben Chilwell, Kieran Tierney and Raphaël Guerreiro have all been linked with the Anfield side, and reports this morning suggested that manager Jürgen Klopp could be set to turn to Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs in his search for a new left back.

According to Wayne Veysey of website Football Insider, Klopp has sounded out Gunners defender Gibbs as a solution to a problem that has been afflicting Liverpool since John Arne Riise left Anfield nearly a decade ago.

The likes of Andrea Dossena, Fabio Aurelio and José Enrique have all tried and failed to make that position their own, and the sense of frustration around Moreno has become palpable in recent months.

26 year old Gibbs has seen his position as Arsenal’s first choice left back usurped by Spaniard Nacho Monreal, starting only three Premier League fixtures last season.

The England international, while not completely surplus to requirements at the Emirates, would be allowed to leave by Arsène Wenger for the right place – and the £12m fee being reported by Veysey would be more than enough to secure Gibbs’ signature.

It would be a surprise to see this move come to fruition. Though Liverpool are not on Arsenal’s level right now, Wenger would surely be highly reluctant to do anything that could potentially strengthen a side that could turn out to be a rival down the line.

Though he has lost players to top clubs in the past, that was not by choice – one gets the feeling that the manager has some degree of say over where Gibbs ends up.

To that end, while he is likely to leave the Emirates this summer, it probably won’t be to Liverpool.
