Liverpool are planning a move for Gonzalo Higuain in a deal worth over £30 million reportedly on the cards, according to reports.
Arsenal are looking to sign Porto striker Jackson Martinez but with reports in Italy suggesting that Martinez will be Napoli’s replacement for Higuain should he go, Liverpool’s advances could stall Arsenal’s chance of signing the Colombia international, according to the Daily Express.
This is just another example of the intricacies involved in the transfer market and another example of what looks Arsenal not getting the man they’re after. If Liverpool do buy Higuain and Martinez is drawn from Porto to Napoli it shouldn’t affect Arsenal too much.
Although they are hit by injuries at the moment, Theo Walcott is set to return soon to give further competition to both Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez. Olivier Giroud has been hit by injury but once he returns in the new year there will be further options for Wenger to choose from.
For Liverpool it would be a superb addition to the squad as they are hugely missing the ability of Luis Suarez. If either Balotelli or Sturridge do become injured it leaves Rodgers with little cover of the calibre that will win the Reds Champions League games or Premier League games for that matter.
Beating Ludogorets in the first of their Champions League ties is all well and good but it will be interesting to see how well Balotelli can bed into this Liverpool side and cope with the double pressure of having to replace Sturridge’s goals for the time being as well as the ever present question of will they replace Luis Suarez as a team or can a striker do it individually?
A large chunk of how the rest of Liverpool’s season will pan out will be decided by the time rolls around to sign Higuain but if the Merseyside club can manage to sign the Argentine international they will be a lot more menacing for opposing defences.
