Former Liverpool Defender Jamie Carragher has named his dream five-a-side, and all are former teammates of his.

Speaking to Soccer AM on Sky Sports, the ex-defender shunned the opportunity to name himself in the five-man lineup, instead handing the central defensive berth to former England captain John Terry.

Terry was the only non-Liverpool player to be picked by Carragher in a group that includes a number of Reds legends from the Premier League era.

In goal, Carragher briefly flirts with the idea of picking David Seaman, whom he played with at international level, before ultimately selecting “by far the best goalkeeper he played with at Liverpool” Pepe Reina. Explaining his decision, Carragher praised Reina’s ability with his feet as well as his big personality and defensive record.

In defence, Carragher picks Terry as he believes the Chelsea man to be the best defender of the Premier League era:

“…great with both feet, a warrior, a leader…the obvious choice.”

The 38-year-old opts for a Champions League-winning midfield in the form of Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso.

On Gerrard:

“Possibly the greatest player to ever play for the club, and one of the best in British football over the past 20 or 30 years. He’d be in the team and he’d be captain.”

On Alonso:

“That was difficult because when you think of players that have played for England, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes David Beckham, even at Liverpool Javier Mascherano or Didi Hamann, but World Cup winner, Spanish international Xabi Alonso deserves to be included.

“Fantastic CV in what he’s won and the clubs he’s played for, so I couldn’t find anyone better.”

Up front, Carragher had a multitude of options. Throughout his career he has played with the likes of Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres, but in the end he selected Luis Suárez.

“He’s the best centre-forward in the world, and has been for the past three or four years. That year he has at Liverpool [31 goals in 3013/14] he was by far the best player in the Premier League, so I’m going to go for Luis Suárez.”
