The Liverpool clear-out is set to continue today, as Ádám Bogdan is on the verge of joining Wigan on a season-long loan deal.
While this deal has been on the cards for some time, the Liverpool Echo are today reporting that the goalkeeper has travelled to the DW Stadium ahead of a temporary move.
Although Bogdan has continued to train at Melwood as normal, he was not due to be taken by Jürgen Klopp on their pre-season tour of the US this week.
With Danny Ward and Ryan Fulton also having left on loan deals, 18-year-old Shamal George is likely to be taken as Klopp’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet. Looking beyond that, the prospect of 39-year-old former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger signing on a short-term deal has increased.
Bogdan was signed from Bolton on a free transfer by previous manager Brendan Rodgers. Despite only starting six games for the club in his twelve months on Merseyside, Bogdan’s time at Liverpool was notable for the amount of errors he committed – a 3-0 defeat last December to newly-promoted Watford being a particular lowlight.
In fact, following that string of errors, he was demoted by Klopp to third choice behind Ward.
His mistakes and lack of first team football led to exclusion from Hungary’s Euro 2016 squad – he will therefore be hoping that a solid run in the Championship side will put him back into contention for his national side.
Despite the fact that this is considered a loan deal, with Bogdan’s Liverpool contract due to expire at the end of the season, he is in effect leaving Anfield permanently.
He will become the tenth senior player to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis this summer, with more departures expected in the coming days and weeks.
In terms of new signings, Ragnar Klavan is currently having a medical of his own at Melwood and should be announced tomorrow, while talks are ongoing with Newcastle regarding a £25m deal for Gini Wijnaldum.
