Liverpool have lined up a move for Ajax winger Anwar El-Ghazi as Jürgen Klopp makes the finishing touches to his squad following Sunday’s victory over Arsenal, say Il Tiempo.
The Reds have already made a number of impressive moves this summer across the board but are seemingly after one more winger before the end of the transfer window.
Reds fans are desperate for a new left-back after Alberto Moreno’s horrendous display against the Gunners in the 4-3 win, but Jürgen Klopp has defended the Spaniard.
“What we spoke about after the game is how can we defend together differently. I’ve said a number of times that I don’t have any interest in criticising players. Alberto played, there’s a reason for that. That’s what I’m thinking about, not what other people want me to think about.
“I really don’t understand the question. Tell me! The world is not happy with our left-back or what?”
El-Ghazi is one of Ajax’s most highly-regarded players, and the Dutch club will not be willing to let the winger go for a cheap fee.
The 21-year-old, valued at €18 million, scored eleven goals in twenty-seven Eredivisie games last season and is also being courted by Serie A giants AC Milan and Lazio.
Moves to either Italian outfit could be a better fit for El-Ghazi, who will need constant first-team football to ensure his development.
However, the lure of Liverpool and the temptation of being coached by such a renowned figure in Jürgen Klopp certainly could sway the Dutchman.
El Ghazi is taller than the general majority of wide men at 6ft 2in, and has hit double figures in the top flight since his breakthrough two seasons ago.
With Klopp seemingly favouring an attack-orientated 4-3-3 this season, El Ghazi would be an astute signing in what will be an arduous campaign.
The absence of European football does relieve the Reds some strain in terms of recovery time between matches however, giving them an edge over their rivals.
The question is, will El-Ghazi give Liverpool the final push?
