Leicester City’s triumph over Sevilla last night, progressing to the Quarter Finals of the Champions League was celebrated by the majority of neutral football fans but could be disastrous for both Liverpool and Arsenal supporters.
Leicester’s progression to the last eight and Manchester United with one foot in the Europa League Quarter Finals could have disastrous consequences for whoever finishes in fourth place in this season’s Premier League.
The Sun report that if Leicester win the Champions League and Manchester United claim the Europa League title, whoever finishes in fourth place in the Premier league will fall into the Europa League and automatically lose their Champions League playoff slot, with the maximum number of teams from the same country permitted to take part in the Champions League each season, limited to five.
With Chelsea running away with the title and Manchester City and Tottenham favourites to finish in second and third respectfully, both Arsenal and Liverpool are currently battling it out for that crucial fourth spot with Manchester United thought to have too much ground to make up following a season of indifferent results.
As of last season the Europa League winners will qualify for a Champions League group place next season which many believe is the best chance Jose Mourinho has of making the competition.
As for Leicester, despite struggling to fight off the threat of relegation and sacking their best ever manager in Claudio Ranieri, new boss Craig Shakesphere has reignited the passion and tempo of last season which was evident last night at the King Power, defeating favourites Sevilla 2-0.
Many people might not believe Leicester can go all the way, buy those same people would never have thought the Foxes would win the Premier League title last season.
Supporters of Liverpool and Arsenal will hope the fairy tale does not have a happy ending on this occasion.
