Leeds Striker Gets Banned For ‘Doing A Luis Suárez’ On Opponent

Leeds United forward Souleymane Doukara has been charged with violent conduct and suspended for eight games for biting an opponent.

The incident occurred on February 23rd, when Doukara is alleged to have bitten Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta in his side’s 1-1 draw with the Cottagers at Elland Road.

Doukara, 24, has only been a bit part player in what has been yet another season of untold turmoil at Leeds – his record of two goals from fifteen Championship appearances means that he is not likely to be missed too much during his prolonged absence. They currently sit in 13th place in the table, untroubled by either the playoffs or relegation.

In a statement, the FA pointed out that the uniqueness of the situation meant that an eight game suspension was warranted and justified:

“The breach of FA Rule E3, which the player denied at an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing on Wednesday [30 March 2016], was considered a non-standard case given the seriousness and both unusual and violent nature of the misconduct”

As unusual as situations like this are, this is not the first time in recent years that they have had to respond to a biting incident.

In April 2013, then-Liverpool striker Luis Suárez was given a ten game ban by an independent panel after biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

A the time, the FA decided that the initial automatic three-game suspension that goes with a violent conduct charge was not severe enough. In that instance, even British Prime Minister David Cameron was calling on the FA to come down on the Uruguayan striker as hard as possible.

Where Suárez offended again by biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellina at the World Cup a year later – getting a four month ban in the process – one wonders if this suspension will force Doukara to learn his lesson.

With just nine games of the season remaining, however, it looks like his campaign is over.
