Liverpool have been linked to a range of different players this January transfer window from Alex Teixeira to Shane Long to Joel Matip.
Although, so far they have only signed Steven Caulker on loan while Marko Grujic was signed but loaned back to Red Star Belgrade until the summer. It looks as though the Anfield club may not be doing much more business this month as we approach the final few days of the transfer window, but according to speculation this hasn’t stopped Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp from looking ahead to possible transfer business in the summer.
The Daily Mirror reported on Wednesday morning that Jurgen Klopp has made contact with Andy Gross who is the representative of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka. The reason behind the communication between Klopp and Xhaka’s agent is rumoured to be regarding a possible summer transfer to Liverpool rather than anything in the near future.
Xhaka has spoke about his desire to one day play in the Premier League which led to him being heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, but speculation of that move has been quiet in recent times.
It would take a huge fee from any club to tempt Borussia Monchengladbach to sell their star midfielder in the near future as he could cost as much as £37m due to him having over three years left on his contract. Although, if a club was willing to wait until 2017 to snap up the midfielder, they would only have to pay £22m as his release clause can be activated in the final two years of his contract.
Xhaka began his football career in his homeland of Switzerland at well-known club Basel. The midfielder spent ten years at the club where he worked his way up the ranks and into the first team where he was part of the squad which won two Swiss titles and one Swiss Cup. Former Basel coach Thorsten Fink referred to the quality of Xhaka by saying;
“Xherdan Shaqiri is the best talent in Switzerland…after Granit Xhaka”.
The Swiss midfielder signed for Borussia Monchengladbach in May 2012 in a deal worth £6.5m. Since then, the 23 year old has managed to play 95 league games for Monchengladbach and scored 6 goals in the Bundesliga. This season has been the most impressive campaign in the central midfielder’s career as he has scored 3 times and made 1 assist. Xhaka is known for being a great passer of the ball as he makes an average of 79.3 passes per games and has a successful passing rate of 84.6%. The Swiss international is 6ft tall and also physically strong as he wins an average of 3 aerial duels per game and uses his strong physical presence to win battles in the midfield area. The 23 year old also puts in a shift in defence as he makes an average of 2.5 tackles, 1.8 clearances and 2.8 interceptions per game.
If Klopp can somehow use his connections in Germany to help him complete this transfer deal in the summer, it would bring a huge boost to Liverpool’s central midfield options as they would have Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Lucas Leiva, Marko Grujic and Granit Xhaka to choose from.
