Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher Could Be Set To Start Vs. Man United On Saturday

Irish goalkeeper could be in line to start in Liverpool’s International Champions Cup clash with Manchester United this weekend.

The 19-year-old Corkman has featured intermittently in Liverpool’s pre-season campaign thus far, but could be thrust further into the spotlight against Jose Mourinho’s side in Michigan this weekend.

Loris Karius has been forced to sit out Friday’s training session with a sore knee, putting his participation in Saturday’s friendly clash in doubt.

Should the German miss out, and with other senior keepers Alisson Becker and Simon Mignolet still absent due to their extended post-World Cup break, Kelleher could be set to battle it out with Polish under-21 international Kamil Grabara for the chance to start at the 107,000-capacity Michigan Stadium.

The former Ringmahon Rangers goalkeeper has been impressive in his appearances so far, making a fine stop to deny Leroy Sane in the 2-1 win against Man City earlier this week.

With Mignolet seemingly set for a move away from Anfield before the transfer window closes, a good performance against Man United would be a significant boost to Kelleher’s chances of staking a claim to that third-choice senior spot behind Alisson and Karius in the coming season.

Naby Keita and Gini Wijnaldum’s participation is also in doubt as they recover from neck and muscle issues respectively.
