Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius could only apologise to supporters after suffering what only be described as a nightmare in Kiev.
The German made two catastrophic mistakes on Saturday night as the Reds fell to a 3-1 defeat in Kiev, leaving Jurgen Klopp still searching for his first trophy at Anfield despite reaching three finals.
Speaking to TalkSport after the match, Karius took full responsibility for the errors and admitted that the mistakes essentially cost Liverpool the Champions League:
“If I could go back in time, I would. I feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down. having left the pitch in tears after the final whistle.
“It’s very hard right now but that’s the life of a goalkeeper. These goals cost us the title, basically.
“My mistakes cost the team and lost us the final… I’m so sorry, to everyone.”

While Karius was at fault for two of the goals, there was nothing he could do about the third. Gareth Bale, who had just entered the fray as a second-half substitute, scored with an overhead kick in what was arguably the greatest goal ever scored in a Champions League final.
What happens now regarding Karius’ status as Liverpool’s number one is unclear, but it would not be a surprise to see the links to Roma’s Alisson surface in the near future.
