Jose Mourinho clearly appears to be in the same mindset as us, he’s desperate for the new season to start.
And the new season cannot come soon enough. Because right now, Jose Mourinho is talking absolute rubbish. Over the last day or so he’s treated us to some absolute Mourinho-isms. Notably on his rivals in Arsenal and Mancehster United.
“If you add up the amounts clubs have spent in the last three or four years I think maybe you will find a surprise,”
This was one of Jose’s lines as he spoke to The Guardian. The barb is aimed at Arsenal in particular.
“If you add up the amounts clubs have spent in the last three or four years I think maybe you will find a surprise. If you put Özil plus Alexis Sánchez, plus Chambers, plus Debuchy, you will find a surprise. It’s a fantastic squad with good players, fantastic goalkeeper, they are more than ready to be a title contenders. Get a calculator. That is the easiest thing, it leaves no space for speculation. If you want to be honest, objective and pragmatic it is the easiest job for a manager to do.”
Great point Jose, let’s whip out that calculator then. Well that’s exactly want one Redditor did on the Arsenal sub-reddit. Here are the results. Credit to Redditor chambo_rambo_chambo for the spade work.
Now, we know there are a lot of variables not being accounted for. Inflation being a large one, but regardless, the point has been made. Yes, Wenger’s average spend is likely higher over the last number of years, but Jose is talking crap.
One very interesting point to note is the one-man spending mission Louis van Gaal is on. Only one season in he’s already eclipsed everybody’s average spend.
Then we have his wonderful comments on Eden Hazard. A great player, the best in the Premier League last year. But better than Ronaldo and in the same bracket as Messi? No, just no. Last season, Messi scored 49 times in 44 appearances for club and country as well as 21 assists. Ronaldo? He produced 51 goals and 16 assists from 35 appearances. Eden Hazard, while great, got 17 goals and 9 assists in 38 appearances. Sit down Jose.
But none of this is surprising. Jose Mourinho is a perennial trash-talker. When you play for him, you are the best in the world, when you don’t you aren’t. Just look at the change is his comments on Ronaldo as proof. Jose is getting his mind games in early and it’s pretty obvious why. He’s about to face an almighty fight to retain the Premier League.
Arsenal look settled and have finally poached a Chelsea player, and what a player, in the form of Petr Cech. Manchester United look ominously good, fuelled by Louis van Gaal’s unbridled desire to win a league during his tenure. Manchester City, well, who knows what to expect from them?
Perhaps a tinge of fear and a huge dose of boredom have fueled the current bout of trash-talk, but don’t worry, only two more weeks till Jose’s nonsense is drowned out by week in, week out football.
