Phil Jones has made a strong start to the new Premier League season – but old habits can sometimes die hard.
The England international has kept new signing Victor Lindelof out of the starting lineup for the opening weeks of the new campaign wand was even nominated for Player of the Month for August, but his unconventional defensive style can sometimes look clumsy.
Such an example of this came at St. Mary’s on Saturday, during Man United’s clash with Southampton. With the minutes ticking away and the visitors protecting a 1-0 lead, Southampton looked to start an attack with Dusan Tadic trying to play a ball to Nathan Redmond in the box. The forward, however, saw the ball intercepted by Jones although the defender’s subsequent clearance didn’t quite go to plan…

Awkward looking clearance aside, Jones put in aother stellar performance at the back for Jose Mourinho’s side, contributing massively to the clean sheet and was named man of the match for his efforts. Lindelof may be waiting a while longer to take his place next to Eric Bailly at the heardt of the Man United defence, as was the plan when he arrived from Benfica in pre-season.
That said, that particular passage did make many immediately call to mind this infamous tackle on Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud from a couple of seasons ago…
