Video Assistant Referee Slated As Italy Receive A Ridiculously Harsh Red Card At The U-20 World Cup

Italy Red Card

Italy have progressed to the semi-finals of the Under-20 World Cup in South Korea, but won’t be thanking the new Video Assistant technology for that anytime soon.

Alberigo Evani’s side came through extra-time in Suwon to defeat Zambia 3-2, but had to play the entire second half and the additional time with only ten men after a massive refereeing error.

With Italy 1-0 down and approaching half time, Giuseppe Pezzella was adjudged by referee Roddy Zambrano to have brought down Zambia’s Edward Chilufya as he bore down on goal. While a penalty was initially recorded, a call to the Video Assistant Referee reversed that penalty but resulted in Pezzella’s sending off.

Chilufya rounded the keeper and subsequently lost his balance, leading to the highly controversial red card.

While VAR has generally been seen as a positive introduction to the game, incidents like this prove that human error is still something that can and will still happen

A dramatic end to the 90 minutes saw both sides score in the last five minutes to level it up at 2-2, before Luca Vido’s extra time winner set up a semi-final showdown with England on Thursday.
