Italian football has suffered many years in the wilderness as the English, Spanish and German leagues continue to progress and the world’s best players opt to move elsewhere.

Things may be about to change however, with the £200 million Chinese investment at Inter Milan, meaning they can once again compete with the biggest spending clubs when top players are on the move.

Dimitri Payet is one such player Inter Milan should be after, according to honorary Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti.

Quoted in the Irish Mirror, Moratti had this to say about the French international:

“As a fan, I would love to see Payet in an Inter shirt. However, the great champions are currently elusive, you have to be lucky enough to find the right opportunity.

“We are missing 2-3 players to be competitive. The important thing is to have solid players that ensure continuity.”

Inter could now afford Payet with the Suning Commerce Group having completed their purchase of a majority stake in Inter, taking 68.55 per cent of the Italian club, with an investment of £200 million.

Payet has recently signed an improved five-year contract at West Ham United where he excelled last season after signing for what now looks like the bargain of the century (£10 million) a mere 12 months ago.

He has continued his impressive form into this summer’s European Championships where he has helped France reach the quarter-finals, where they will meet surprise England conquerors Iceland on Sunday.

Once France have completed their involvement in the competition Payet is sure to be in high demand, with West Ham and Slaven Bilic having a major fight on their hands to keep the player at the club.

At 29 years of age major success has come late for Payet and offers from Inter Milan, and more than likely other European giants, will provide Payet with a decision to make on where he wants to play his football next season.

If Payet should decide to leave West Ham, they can be sure to receive a healthy profit on their £10 million investment.
