Lee O’Connor joined Manchester United’s academy from Villa Football Club in Waterford last summer having impressed with Irish youth teams.
After being crowned FAI U-15 Player of the Year and named captain of the U-16 national side, O’Connor was snapped up by the English giants despite widespread interest.
He enjoyed a brilliant debut season playing both at right-back and centre-back for Kieran McKenna’s U-18 side that cruised through the regular season before injuries halted their progress in the play-offs. In a team filled with incredible talents such as Angel Gomes (who made his senior team bow aged just 16 in May) and Tahith Chong, the Irishman certainly did not seem out of place.
He’s currently leading an academy side in the Otten Cup in The Netherlands and scored an absolutely superb goal in his team’s opening match against Cruzeiro.
Picking up the ball on the halfway line, he danced his way through the defence before beating the goalkeeper at the second time of asking.
O’Connor’s solo effort is the second goal in the below clip.

The upcoming season is a massively important time in the player’s development with him likely to be one of the U-18s’ leaders as well as getting some reserve team action along the way.
