One of Ireland’s most technically gifted footballers – Wes Hoolahan – has been awarded the honour of the being selected in the Football League’s Football Manager Team of the Decade.
The Football League awards, celebrating its tenth anniversary this season, decided to remember this milestone by selecting the best XI players who have featured in the last decade at their annual awards ceremony.
Since leaving Shelbourne in 2006 Hoolahan has become one of the League of Ireland’s most renowned exports. On leaving Tolka Park in 2006, the 32-year-old joined Livingston of Scotland, before beginning a lengthy career in the Football League with Blackpool and Norwich City.
After impressing with the Seasiders, he moved to Norwich in 2008, where Hoolahan has been an ever-present since, earning him a sustained presence within the Republic of Ireland squad.
Often cast aside in favour of more defensive-minded players during Giovanni Trapattoni’s reign, the leash on Hoolahan is beginning to ease in the Martin O’Neill/Roy Keane-led era. An outstanding display against Poland in Ireland’s latest qualifying game against Poland precedes this major accolade for Hoolahan.
The format for inclusion in the Team of the Decade was decided by clubs selecting who they thought were their best players from the last ten years. Those names were then voted upon by fans and the roll of honour from past Football League award winners.
Speaking to football-league.co.uk, Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of The Football League, said,
“The 10th Football League Awards has given us the opportunity to reward outstanding performance, both on and off the pitch, during what has been a memorable Football League season.
“Each of our winners thoroughly deserves this recognition and, once again, we’ve seen exceptional levels of talent, dedication and achievement across all our nominees.”
Hoolahan now rubs shoulders, in this XI, with players such as Adam Lallana, Gareth Bale and Rickie Lambert.
