The Ireland national side kick off 2018 on Friday evening with a friendly clash with Turkey in Antalya.
Martin O’Neill’s men will be determined to put in a good showing to help banish some of the demons incurred on their last international outing – that 5-1 hammering by Denmark at the Aviva last November.
O’Neill has come up against Turkey before – a 2-1 defeat in Dublin in May 2014 – but we have to go back nearly two decades for the last time Ireland were away to Friday’s opponents, in a Euro 2000 qualification play-off in 1999. On that occasion, Mick McCarthy’s side needed a goal in the Ataturk Stadium following a 1-1 draw at Lansdowne in the first leg – but a 0-0 draw in windy conditions meant that Ireland’s hopes of making the Euros were dashed.
There were also ugly scenes at the end when substitute Tony Cascarino was involved in an altercation with Turkish fans and players, leading to the forward receiving a four-game ban (though he subsequently retired from international duty anyway), while the FAI were fined £5,000.
The Boys in Green were missing a couple of key players, but can you name the eleven that did start on that night in Istanbul almost 20 years ago?
