Sean Maguire Named In Provisional Ireland Squad To Face Georgia And Serbia

Martin O’Neill has confirmed his provisional Republic of Ireland squad for next month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers -and there’s a place for Preston striker Sean Maguire.

The Boys in Green are finely poised in their group as it stands, and victory against both Georgia and Serbia in September would put them firmly in control of the table on the road to Russia.

O’Neill confirmed that it was Maguire’s performance against reigning Premier Division champions Dundalk in June – a match that O’Neill himself attended at Oriel Park in which the then-Cork City forward scored a hat-trick – that had a big bearing in his inclusion.

While this is obviously a positive, it should be worth noting that this is still a provisional squad, there is no guarantee that Maguire will make the final cut when the squad is reduced in the near future. Still, it is just reward for the 23-year-old to see his name in the list having scored 20 goals for the Leesisders in the League of Ireland this season and earning that move to the Championship.

O’Neill has continued his tradition of naming bloated provisional squads by including 39 players on his list this time. Reading’s Liam Kelly and Maguire’s Preston teammate Greg Cunningham are also included in a very familiar looking panel overall.
