Watch: Ireland Players On The Scoresheet As Aston Villa Continue Push For Promotion

Aston Villa have kept alive their hopes of an automatic promotion spot with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Reading in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Most notably for Irish footballing fans were the second-half goals scored by international players Scott Hogan and Conor Hourihane.

Hourihane put Aston Villa 2-0 ahead with a headed goal from a Robert Snodgrass‘ cross. The Corkman is now the highest scoring central midfielder in one season for Villa since David Platt back in 1990-1991 – with the former Barnsley player scoring his tenth goal of the campaign.

Scott Hogan then sealed the win seven minutes later with a smart finish, pouncing on Reading keeper Vito Mannone’s attempted dribble out of the area.

With six games remaining, Aston Villa currently sit in third place in the Championship table, seven points off the automatic promotion spot. If the Irish boys keep producing, then gaining that automatic promotion spot will certainly not be impossible for Villa.

David Meyler also got on the scoresheet tonight, as he secured a draw for Hull against championship runaway leaders Wolves – finishing off from the spot with a calm penalty to score his first goal since September – capping off a bright night for the Irish internationals.

Ireland under-21 defender Ryan Delaney also scored his first goal for Rochdale, as the former Cork City man netted in a 2-0 win away to Bury in League One.
