Rep. Of Ireland V Georgia: Confirmed Lineups, McCarthy Starts

Republic of Ireland have named their starting eleven for tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

A number of players departed the squad at the beginning of the week through injury, but few (if any) of those would have been in line to start anyway. O’Neill had kept everyone guessing right up to the last minute, but he does make some changes from the side that drew 2-2 in Serbia last month.

The big news is that James McCarthy has been passed fit to play. The Everton midfielder has not played for cub or country since August but has assured O’Neill that he is fit and ready to go. Glenn Whelan drops to the bench.

Shane Duffy comes straight back into the starting lineup, having suspended for the draw in Belgrade last month. Interestingly, he has also been handed the number seven shirt in Aiden McGeady’s absence.

Ciaran Clark also returns to the first eleven, with John O’Shea and Richard Keogh finding themselves relegated to the bench.

Otherwise there are no surprises in O’Neill’s team tonight, although the absence of Norwich playmaker Wes Hoolahan will not go down well in some quarters.
