Ireland Enjoy Significant Rise In Latest FIFA World Rankings

The Republic of Ireland have surged forward in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Martin O’Neill’s side defeated Wales 1-0 in Cardiff last week to secure a World Cup qualification playoff berth, a result that has had significant consequences for their ranking on the ladder.

Ireland have climbed eight places to 26th following the win in Cardiff, up eight places from 34th last month. In doing so, they have leapfrogged the likes of Turkey, Senegal and the United States, and close the gap with Northern Ireland – who themselves slip three places to 23rd after defeats to Germany and Norway cost them a seeded place in Tuesday’s playoff draw.

In terms of Ireland’s potential opponents in said draw, Switzerland have slipped four places to 11th, Italy rise two places to 15th, Croatia hold firm in 18th place and Denmark have climbed seven places to 19th.

On the unseeded side, Sweden have fallen two places to 25th, and Greece are unchanged in 47th. The new rankings have basically confirmed what was already expected with regards which teams are seeded and which are unseeded.

Seeded Teams:

Switzerland (11)
Italy (15)
Croatia (18)
Denmark (19)

Unseeded Teams:

Northern Ireland (23)
Sweden (25)
Republic of Ireland (26)
Greece (47)

Elsewhere, England have risen three places to 12th having secured their place in Russia, while Wales slip to 14th. Scotland, despite also missing out, have enjoyed a massive leap of their own as they climb fourteen places to 29th.

The top six – namely Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium and Poland – all remain in place but France are up one to 7th, Spain up three to 8th and Peru have cracked the top ten by moving up two places to 10th. Chile remain unchanged in ninth despite failing to qualify for the World Cup.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, have crawled back into the top 20, moving up nine places to 20th after beating Sweden in Amsterdam last week.
