David de Gea’s future at Manchester United is far from certain at present and if he eventually does go to Real Madrid, as has been touted almost everywhere since the transfer window opened, then United are said to be planning a swoop for Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak.
AS report that the 22-year-old stopper will only be allowed to depart the Spanish capital if his €45 million (roughly £32.3 million) release clause is met.
This is definitely a pricey sum for a goalkeeper. However, should De Gea leave, AS state that the €35 million (roughly £21.2 million) from his sale will be used to soften the financial blow.
It could well be a sensible trade-off for the north west club. Although De Gea is still young and is undeniably talented, Oblak has two years on the United stopper and boasts some impressive stats of his own from last season, most notably seven clean sheets in eleven La Liga games as well as two apiece in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
It is a gamble and United fans will not want to change their keeper but if De Gea is to go, Oblak looks like a ready-made replacement.
News of this potential move comes as United look as though they could be on the verge of signing two of world football’s best midfielders in Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
