A new report from Algerian football news source LeButeur, declaring that Riyad Mahrez will join Arsenal in the coming days, broke the internet last night.
Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, it appears as though this report simply recycles old speculation in England, quoting an unnamed English journalist “close to the club” – a reporting tactic that has been used by several English tabloids in the past. They even add that Sky Sports reported that Arsenal are willing to pay 42m pounds for Mahrez, which simply isn’t true.
Not many sources have followed up on the initial reports of Mahrez negotiating with Arsenal, which could mean that LeButeur are just late with their story, and it’s nothing to get too excited about.
In fact, LeButeur have been tracking this story since June, and regularly base their reports on sources such as The Sun.
Overall, they don’t seem to be too well connected to transfer affairs in England, and their exclusive source shouldn’t be believed until we hear more from others in the coming days.
Arsenal fans were thrown into a frenzy of excitement following the club’s friendly against Lens last week, when it was revealed that Mahrez’s agent was present at the game. Eurosport France released an exclusive claiming that the Leicester star’s agent managed to seal a deal with the Arsenal camp in Lens, making a deal imminent.
Claudio Ranieri has spoken to the press several times since then, denying that a move is impending.
Leicester officials are currently attempting to tie Riyad Mahrez down to a new contract, but there are no guarantees that he will stay. A move to the Emirates Stadium is certainly not out of the picture, but reports about an agreement being reached should be taken with a pinch of salt.
