Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored the goal to put further daylight between Manchester United and Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday. But for the intervention of Ander Herrera, however, the goal may never have come about.
Despite Mkhitaryan’s relative struggles in the Premier League this season, the Armenian international was in fantastic form in Europe, scoring six goals in eleven games in a campaign that ended in silverware.
However, he has Herrera to thank for the icing on the cake in Stockholm on Wednesday night.
Early in the second half, Man United received a corner. With Mkhitaryan retreating from the box, and Herrera making his way towards it, the Spanish international shouted at his teammate to venture forward, given the relative difference in their scoring capabilities. Herrera saw the move to make and although he didn’t necessarily back himself to find the net from it, he trusted that Mkhitaryan could, and so the former Dortmund forward surged into the penalty area.
Herrera does it again. I have no words for this guy. pic.twitter.com/Yni2e4EjM4

Chris Smalling headed the ball down from the aforementioned corner, and Mkhitaryan was on hand to lose his marker and flick the ball into the Ajax net.
The score would remain at 2-0, thus giving Man United their first ever Europa League/UEFA Cup title.
