Liverpool Owner John W. Henry Has A Little Dig At Philippe Coutinho And Luis Suarez

Ahead of one of the biggest nights in Liverpool’s history, owner John W. Henry has questioned why Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho ever decided to leave.

Both South Americans departed Anfield for Barcelona (albeit four years apart), and Henry has wondered out loud to Associated Press why they felt the need to leave a club like Liverpool.

“Maybe it’s because I’m an American, but I have a difficult time understanding why anyone would want to leave Liverpool,” Henry told the Associated Press.

“The club is so rich in history and tradition, supported by so many millions around the world, in virtually every country of the world.

“You don’t want to be in the position where players want to go somewhere else, even if it is a great club like Barcelona.

“It’s hard to understand why players would want to go to a league where the competition is so weak. They must play 30 or so meaningless matches per year waiting for Champions League matches.

“They’ll be watching this weekend and could have been playing.”

Suarez went on to win the Champions League with Barca in his first season at Camp Nou in 2015, while Coutinho will have to wait until next season before making his European debut with the club due to his ineligibility to play in this campaign. Both were part of the side that claimed the Spanish league and cup double this season.

The Brazilian played a key role in Liverpool’s group stage success, but Klopp’s side haven’t missed him in the knockout stages this far as they blew the opposition away on their route to the final in Kiev.
