Head to Head: Alexis Sanchez vs. Diego Costa

Arsenal attacker Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea forward Diego Costa have both been in stunning form for their respective clubs this season. We evaluate who has had a stronger season statistically using Squawka’s Comparison Matrix.

Having played in a variety of positions since joining Arsenal from Barcelona in the summer of 2014, his manager Arsene Wenger has decided that the Chilean’s best position is in a central role ahead of playmaker Mesut Ozil in a 4-2-3-1.

However, the Frenchman is keeping a tight leash on Sanchez, with the long-serving Gunners boss reportedly handing his star man a stern warning for overstepping the mark with regards to claiming the penalty against Hull.

Regardless, the 27-year-old is in fine form in 2016/17 thus far, as is Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Ever the controversial star, Costa splits more people than a machete but comes with that killer touch in front of goal. The Brazilian Spaniard is a lethal weapon in Antonio Conte’s arsenal¬†and is undoubtedly the team’s biggest threat going forward.

Just five games in, Costa has scored 50 % of Chelsea’s goals so far this season, averaging a goal per game, and is sure to be the man that Arsenal will need to stop from firing on all cylinders in order to defeat their opponents.

Here’s how the opposing pair compare..

Although Arsenal’s Sanchez has scored two fewer, he has made an impressive seven key passes in just five matches, edging ahead of Costa in this field.

This signifies that even with Costa’s prowess in front of goal, Sanchez is a much more creative individual, an asset which is crucial to Arsene Wenger’s outfit.

The pair match in terms of assists.

Sanchez proves himself to be the stronger player of the two, with stronger statistics in all but shot accuracy here.

Although Costa is not far away from Sanchez in these areas, the former Udinese star has a remarkable pass completion rate, as well as creating eight chances for his team-mates.

Ever agile and quick, Sanchez also outweighs Costa through successful take-ons.

Despite Costa just falling short here, he will be battling hard to steal the limelight from Sanchez tonight in what is a mouth-watering tie.
