Manchester United missed out on top transfer targets last summer, and news emerging on Monday suggests Jose Mourinho will be disappointed once more.
Long time target Antoine Griezmann is said to be interesting Barcelona with their advisers reportedly in talks with the player’s representatives.
According to reports from Spain Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu met with the players family to trash out a summer deal for the 26-year-old. Club director Guillermo Amor told Movistar that if, as the reports have suggested, that president Bartomeu has met with Griezmann’s camp then that is a sign of progress:
“If Bartomeu met with Griezmann’s family as the newspapers say, then there may well have been an approach.
“Though I don’t know anything for sure.”
Sky Sports’ Guillem Balague has also suggested that Barca are now favourites to take Griezmann away from Atleti.
However, Manchester United have not given up on their hopes of signing the French International who is rumoured to be valued at £100m by Atletico Madrid with manager Diego Simeone admitting he would not stand in the way of the player if he wished to move on to further his career.
Man United were firm favorites to land the player last summer only for Griezmann to snub a move due to Atletico’s transfer ban, choosing to remain loyal to his club who could not replace their star man until January.
Chelsea forward Diego Costa is in training, eagerly awaiting his second debut for the La Liga club next month meaning Griezmann is now in a position to sort out his future ahead of representing France at the World Cup next summer.
Barcelona have yet to make contact with Atletico, giving Jose Mourinho some hope in his attempt to lure the player to the Premier League instead.
The Portuguese boss will be hoping the players close friendship with Paul Pogba may swing the deal in Man United’s favour.
