Two of English football’s heavyweights come face to face this afternoon as Leeds take on Newcastle at Elland Road.
Showing how far both clubs have fallen, however, the match takes place in the Championship.
Both sides have been in strong form recently, as Newcastle chase promotion at the first time of asking while Leeds look to break away from midtable mediocrity and make a decent stab at the playoffs.
Rafa Benitez’s side made the better start today, but had a bit of help from Leeds goalkeeper for their opening goal just before the half-hour mark.
An overhit long pass from Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback should have been picked out of the air easily by the former England goalkeeper, but his attempt to catch the ball ended in a fumble right into the path of opposition striker Dwight Gayle – and the inform Magpie poked home from close range.
20 – Rob Green has made 20 errors leading to goals since Aug 2012; five more than any other keeper in the top two English leagues. Clanger.

Heading towards half time Leeds appeared to woken up to some degree, but Garry Monk’s side now have it all to do to continue their four-game unbeaten run. Should they turn this around, they could move into fourth in the Championship table.
As it stands, Newcastle will have a point advantage at the top of the Championship. Given the amount of money thay have spent and the calibre of the manager at St. James’s Park they were always going to be challenging – but their rampant form is already starting to look ominous for the rest of the league.
