No Ronaldo? I mean really?? Well anyway here it is, Italian goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon gives his all-time Champions League XI and it’s mighty impressive indeed.
There’s a decidedly Italian touch to this squad which may have something to do with Gigi being an Italian whose played in the Serie A for a very long time, but that’s just a hunch.
What you can’t fault Buffon for is a team that might actually work. Too often these all-time XIs wouldn’t actually function as a unit, but this one has promise. The back five speaks for itself, defensive ability that is second to none and in Roberto Carlos and Thuram there’s a genuine wing threat.
A midfield of Gattuso, Baggio and Pirlo is a perfect balance of grit, attacking power and passing ability. And well any forward line that contains Messi is going to be ok, but provide a poacher like Ronaldo (the original, of course) and Pavel Nedved, the hipsters’ choice, well now that’s a forward line we’d like to have seen.
