Even Manuel Neuer, arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the world, is capable of embarrassing himself.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper was in action for Germany on Saturday night in a World Cup qualifier at home to the Czech Republic, and although most of the action was going on at the other end in a routine 3-0 win, the best (certainly the funniest) moment of the night came courtesy of Neuer in the German box.

Attempting to kick the ball along the net into his arms as the game petered out, the 30-year-old clearly got too much purchase on it and ended up clocking himself right in the face.

Luckily for him, the ball was not in action at that time so minor embarrassment was the worst that Neuer had to endure. His ego should make a full recovery before Germany’s match against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

It has not been a good week for superstar goalkeepers, truth be told. Following David De Gea’s error in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Stoke last weekend, Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon committed a rare but significant error to allow Vitolo to put Spain in the lead in the two sides’ 1-1 draw in midweek.
