In one of the more left-field rumours of the week, Manchester United are today being linked with a move for 33 year old Wolfsburg centre back Naldo.
Naldo, affectionately nicknamed “The Beast”, is apparently on the radar of the Old Trafford club as they look to bring in an experienced head to help bring through the young talent, such as the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, according to German newspaper Kicker.
Naldo will of course be familiar to Manchester United fans having scored twice against them in a 3-2 win for Wolfsburg in the game that knocked Louis van Gaal’s side out of the Champions League earlier this season.
The former Brazilian international arrived at the Volkswagen Arena for €3million in 2012 where he quickly established himself as an important member of the team.
Significantly, his contract expires at the end of next season, so any transfer would be relatively inexpensive and probably quick to complete. One complication would be that Wolfsburg would like to keep the player, such is the formidable partnership he has formed with fellow Brazilian Dante at the heart of the defence, but if the player does wish to move to Old Trafford then any resistance from the club would be softened.
While Naldo has been in good form this season and is generally one of the league’s better defenders, Manchester United’s interest in him, should it turn out to be solid, would raise some concerns about the club’s transfer policy this summer – mainly due to his age and also the fact that the club are not in a position where they can be cutting corners in signing new players.
In the meantime, Naldo has a Champions League quarter final second leg to prepare for. Wolfsburg take a 2-0 lead to the Bernabéu as they look to navigate past Real Madrid to reach the semi finals of the competition for the first time in their history.
