German Journalist Provides Massive Update On Arsenal’s Pursuit Of Granit Xhaka

With the transfer window set to fling open soon after this season ends, Arsenal are looking to tie up one deal early.

Arsène Wenger has been pursuing Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka for most of the season, and despite the fact that Arsenal fans have come to expect deals like this being in the pipeline only to collapse, this one looks like it will have a successful conclusion.

In fact, it may already be done. Prominent German journalist Raphael Honigstein, of BT Sport and ESPN among others, is reporting that Arsenal have, after seeing an earlier bid rejected, come back and agreed to pay Gladbach’s asking price for the Swiss international, and that a €50m deal to take the player to the Emirates is virtually done.

Honigstein is right when he says that it would be massively out of the norm for Wenger. Given that the club were attempting to negotiate with the Bundesliga side beforehand, to come back in and pay the full asking price is not like them.

That said, given the fact that they have seen deals for the likes of Gonzalo Higuaín and Julian Draxler collapse because of their refusal to pay a few million extra – combined with the shambolic way that their season collapsed this year and the fan protests that ensued as a result – meant that this summer needed to be different for Wenger and Arsenal in terms of their transfer policy.

Given the speed at which Bundesliga clubs conduct transfer business (e.g the Hummels and Sanches deals announced by Bayern Munich yesterday), it would not be a surprise to see Gladbach tying up a deal for Xhaka’s replacement sooner rather than later. Bayern’s Sebastian Rode has been linked already.

Other publications have also picked up on the deal, to the point where an official announcement can be expected ‘imminently‘.

Whether the deal is officially announced before or after (or even during) Xhaka’s involvement with Switzerland in the European Championships remains to be seen, but for now it does look for all the world like Granit Xhaka will be an Arsenal player next season.
