Gerard Pique is not sitting on the fence here.
Barcelona got a 2-1 win on the weekend away to Sevilla, a result garnered thanks to Lionel Messi’s 500th goal for the club. Europa League champions Sevilla have a stunning home record and were thought capable of upsetting the Catalan giants but Messi and Co. spoiled the party as is a habit of theirs.
After the game Gerard Pique made very forthright comments over Messi stellar reputation in the game. Pique will likely be part of Spain’s squad at the 2018 World Cup but his comments will have done little to endear himself to the Madrid contingent of the team.
Speaking following the 2-1 win, Pique outlined his admiration for Messi.
“If the Ballon d’Or were given to the best player in the world Leo would have won it every year since 2009. He’s on another level.” Quote via Daily Mail.
Messi has had to make do with five Ballon D’Or in the last seven years, and it is testament to his incredible talents that this haul is considered insufficient given his other-worldly ability.
The comments come following the announcement of the nominees for the award last week. Common thinking is that Real Madrid stalwart Cristiano Ronaldo will bag the gong this year. The Portuguese play-maker helped Madrid to the Champions League and Portugal to the European Championship title. Most would have few arguments should he be awarded the prize, although Pique clearly has other ideas.
