Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has confirmed that a move to Manchester United is in the offing – but prefers to focus on the World Cup.
Reports on Thursday suggested that the Brazilian international is close to completing a move to Old Trafford that could be as worth as much as £50m – and while Fred has confirmed that talks are ongoing, his mind is firmly on Russia.
As quoted by ESPN, Fred prefers to leave negotiations in the hands of his agent, former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva.
“Talks have been at an advanced stage since January, if I am not mistaken. There was a possible transfer to City. Shortly after, both clubs, City and United talked with Shakhtar and with my agents about a possible transfer.
“And if I am not mistaken, there was news of a strong bid by United. But I am focused solely on the World Cup.
“My agents are taking care of this, led by Gilberto Silva. He’s a very calm guy, one that I give all the freedom [to decide], as he is someone I deeply trust.”
Fred had also been linked with a move to rivals Manchester City, but it looks as though United and Jose Mourinho have stolen a march on the Premier League champions.
In the meantime, the 25-year-old will spend most of the summer in Russia as he looks to help Brazil win the World Cup for the first time since 2002.
