Before his season-ending injury back in March, Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk was the outstanding defender in the Premier League.
Ever since his move from Celtic, the Dutchman has proven himself to be impressively composed on the ball, effective as the last line of defence and an imposing threat going forward. With the Saints finishing in lowly 8th, the 25-year-old was always likely to seek pastures new.
Such is his quality with the ball at his feet, Chelsea and Antonio Conte immediately seemed a likely destination and that move appears to be edging closer with reports of a massive £60 million bid from the Blues.
Gianluca Di Marzio, widely regarded as the most trusted source in football, has revealed that Van Dijk is Conte’s first choice and he is almost certainly headed for Stamford Bridge with John Terry leaving the club and Gary Cahill, now 31, becoming a less viable option going forward.
He’ll become the most expensive defender in history, should the deal go through, eclipsing the £50 million Chelsea received from PSG for David Luiz in 2014. However, unlike with that move, there’s little doubt VVD will be a massive addition to Conte’s side. If he can carry on his form from St. Mary’s, Van Dijk could go a long way to securing a second successive Premier League title for his new side.
