The fixture that has seen more than its fair share of red cards truly sprung into life just after the half-hour mark when James Milner put the home side from the penalty spot, after Adam Lallana went down from a relatively soft challenge from Mason Holgate.

Holgate would be involved in the thick of it again just minutes later when he became embroiled in a tussle with Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino. Firmino immediately gets up to remonstrate with Holgate, and the two players have to be kept apart by referee Bobby Madley before, with Firmino clearly saying something to upset Holgate, being dragged away by their respective teammates. Madley then decides that the incident did not require any further action.

At the time of writing, the score is 1-0 at half-time thanks to that Milner penalty.’
