Everton manager Ronald Koeman is currently revamping his squad as he looks to put a disappointing season last year behind the club.
The Toffees have got off to a promising start in the Premier League so far, with a draw to Tottenham and an away win over West Brom.
However, it’s not all good news for Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy. The 25 year-old was taken off after just 38 minutes at the weekend, and reports in the Daily Mail suggest that the Dutch manager prefers Gareth Barry and Idrissa Gana Gueye in the middle of the park.
The fact that the Merseyside club are also sizing up the acquisition of Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel spells more bad news for McCarthy.
However, he is a proven talent at Premier League level, and it is likely that there would be many potential suitors should Everton elect to sell him.
Tottenham were hot on his heels last summer, but have since signed Victor Wanyama. Those clubs believed to be interested include Sunderland, Watford, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Celtic.
Despite the fact that he was born in Glasgow, McCarthy may not be interested in joining Brendan Rodgers’ side as he looks to establish himself in England’s top flight.
