Watch: Ireland’s Rob Elliot Makes Stunning Last-Ditch Save For Newcastle V Brighton

Elliot Newcastle

Irish international Rob Elliot has established himself as Rafa Benitez’s first-choice goalkeeper over the past few months – and showed why against Brighton on Sunday.

The 31-year-old – still behind Darren Randolph and Keiren Westwood in the international setup – is in action with his side on Sunday afternoon as they look to continue their decent form in the Premier League.

However, it has not been going to plan for the Magpies, as a goal from Tommer Hemed six minutes into the second half has put Chris Hughton’s side in pole position to defeat his former club.

Indeed, it was almost 2-0 just minutes later, as Solly March met the end of a cross-shot from Bruno and looked for all the world to have doubled Brighton’s lead before Elliot’s intervention…

The former Chartlton Athletic keeper showed tremendous reflexes to get back and clear the shot off the line with his foot, with the referee using goal-line technology to confirm that the ball had not crossed the line.

At the time of writing it remains 1-0 to the home side at the AMEX, but Newcastle almost drew level with just over fifteen minutes remaining as substitute Jonjo Shelvey struck the post directly from a corner.

Elliot, meanwhile, is likely to be included in Martin O’Neill’s Ireland squad on Tuesday for the upcoming final two World Cup qualifiers of the campaign.
