Eamon Dunphy has come perilously close to throwing his hat in the ring for England to win the World Cup.
The RTE Sport pundit has written off the chances of both their semi-final opponents and one of the other nations, leaving Belgium as the only team that could stop Gareth Southgate’s side.
Speaking to 2fm’s Game On on Monday evening, Dunphy said that he expects England to comfortably dispatch Croatia on Wednesday – and if it’s France that they face in the final, then the World Cup could very well be heading back with the Three Lions:
“Croatia will be very tired. They’ve gone to two extra-times, and if you have to go to extra-time against Russia. Modric was very good but Rakitic was absent. England will beat them.
“If France go to the final against England, I think England will beat them.
“I don’t think France will be able to defend the setpieces whereas Belgium have three mighty central defenders: Alderwereild, Kompany and Vertonghen.
“England have every chance of being in the final. They should beat Croatia. And if it’s France I think they’ll win it.”
France are the current favourites to win a first World Cup since 1998, followed by England, whose run to the last four has seen optimism steadily growing both inside and outside the camp – though not to the point of expectation.
