The Daily Record’s Duncan Castles has revealed that Manchester United have asked to be “kept informed” about Neymar’s intentions regarding his future at Barcelona.

The Brazilian superstar has been the subject of a recent storm regarding his tax evasion, where Spain’s public prosecutor has called for Neymar to be imprisoned for two years after recent findings.

Brazilian authorities last week charged the player with both evading tax and also discovered and punished the former Santos for the falsification of certain documents.

Furthermore, Barcelona are also engrossed in controversy after it was revealed that the entirety of the breakdown of the transfer fee the Catalans paid for the 24-year-old had not been fully disclosed by the club.

A Spanish government investigation exposed that Barca had paid €40 million of the alleged €86.2 million fee directly to Neymar’s family.

The investigation has resulted in former president Sandro Rosell resigning, whilst the club and current president Josep Maria Bartomeu have also been charged with tax fraud.

Castles writes that Neymar has been advised that any legal issues surrounding him would disappear should he leave Barcelona and presumably La Liga, with the player’s ego one reason for why he may depart the Camp Nou.

Neymar had been promised by Barcelona upon arrival that he would eventually go on to become the leading man for the Catalans, but Luis Enrique’s adoration of Lionel Messi, as well as the club’s reluctance to cash in on the Argentine world star, means that Neymar is often not in the centre of the spotlight.

As well as this, Castles’ tells fans that the clinical forward is the least liked by Barcelona’s fans in the MSN trident, with Luis Suarez and Messi being the poster boys for the general consensus of supporters.

As such, there is perhaps an opportunity for Manchester United to sign Neymar according to Castles, but Barcelona would demand a sum in the region of £180 million – absolutely eradicating the current transfer fee record set by a current United player, Paul Pogba.

Will the deal ever materialise? It’s impossible to say, but it is certain that the proposed signing would be a monumental acquisition for the Red Devils, and after recent events it would be naive to rule anything out.
