He was one of Europe’s top scorers last season and so, unsurprisingly, Gonzalo Higuain has become one of the continent’s most sought after stars.
He’s attracted interest from Arsenal and Juventus among others with his current club Napoli desperate to hold on to their man. Gianluca Di Marzio, one of football’s most trusted voices, has provided a major update in the transfer saga.
A report on his website claims that the two Italian clubs discussed the striker’s future at the league’s headquarters today with the Turin side making an “official request”.
“Napoli was very direct with their response; no will to negotiate, no players can be added in the deal; for Higuain to leave, Juventus will have to pay the entire release clause.”
Despite the rebuttal, it appears that Arsenal have fallen behind in the race for the Argentinian despite claims that Higuain may be London-bound.
If the Naples team take a similar approach to negotiations with the Gunners and decline any swap deals, the player’s mammoth fee may prove too much. It was hoped that an agreement which would see Olivier Giroud head to Italy could potentially be reached.
If Arsene Wenger is willing to loosen the purse strings and splash out, it could be an incredible addition to Arsenal’s squad. But for now, it’s not looking likely.
