Derry City came from behind on Friday night to grab a much deserved win over Northwest rivals Sligo Rovers thanks to goals in each half from Ryan Mc Bride and Aaron Barry.
In a first half dominated by Derry City it was Sligo who struck first after ex Derry favourite Eamon Zayed powered past the Derry defence to score, striking the ball powerfully into the bottom of the Derry net.
Derry had the perfect opportunity to equalise when Kalen Spillane brought down Patrick Mc Eleney in the box but the resulting penalty was comfortably saved by Sligo keeper Richard Brush.
As the first half drew to a close Derry got the goal they deserved when Ryan Mc Bride headed home from a Patrick Mc Eleney free kick.
As the second half started it was Sligo who started the brighter of the two sides but it was Derry who got the all important corner when Aaron Barry headed home from a corner.
Sligo’s cause wasn’t helped when defender Danny Ledwith was sent off after seventy six minutes after picking up his second yellow card. Derry finished off the better off both teams and picked up the all important three points.
This result sees both teams locked on theory seven points in the league and ends whatever faint hope Sligo Rovers fans had of European football next season.
