Former Cork City Defender Ryan Delaney Makes League One Move

Former Cork City defender Ryan Delaney has joined League One side Rochdale on a permanent deal.

Delaney, 21, joined Cork City on loan from Burton Albion for the 2017 season and impressed during his time in Leeside, making 49 appearances in central defence for the eventual league and Cup winners.

His performances throughout the League of Ireland campaign not only resulted in domestic success though, personal success beckoned too as his towering performances didn’t go unnoticed. Consequently, he received a call-up to the Irish u-21 National team, was named Airtricity player of the month for May and he also featured in the PFAI team of the year.

Delaney, now with additional experience behind him, was called back from his loan-spell and rejoined Burton Albion in early December.

“The next month for me is to get myself out there and to show how I’ve developed over the year. It’s more of me showing the manager what I’m capable of and what I can bring to the team,” he told Pundit Arena’s Mixer Irish Football Podcast

Despite his best efforts upon returning and his eagerness to impress, he failed to make an appearance for Burton Albion since.

Now, Delaney has signed a permanent two and a half year deal with struggling League One side, Rochdale AFC.

Speaking on his transfer to Rochdale, he stated:

“I wanted to come to a club that would help me progress even further and I feel that, at this point in my career, Rochdale is going to be a good club to help me to do that,” Delaney told Rochdale’s official website.

“The last year has been very good for me and I enjoyed getting out playing football and getting regular games. I feel as though I’ve improved a lot over the last year, so hopefully I can keep on progressing.”

Rochdale are currently battling it out in the relegation zone, but they’ll be hoping their new signing will bring some much needed stability to their defence.
