In just over 18 months, Broussia Dortmund have gone from Champions league finalists to dead last in the Bundesliga. The team from May 2013 and that which played yesterday are very different indeed. Sean Curtin investigates.
Borussia Dortmund Champions League Final 2013 Starting XI
Borussia Dortmund XI That Lost 2-0 Eintracht & Sit Bottom of The Bundesliga
The current team is almost unrecognisable from the side that faced Bayern Munich in the Champions Legaue Final, with a whopping six changes in a year and a half. Through a combination of transfers, and injuries the new look Borussia Dortmund side has been struggling big time this season.
Here’s a list of the players from the Champions League Final who aren’t in the latest XI and where they are now.
Marcel Schmelzer: Still at Dortmund. An unused sub at the weekend. The experienced German is currently second fiddle to 22 year-old Eric Durm after coming back from injury.
Mats Hummels: Just back from a knee injury that had him out for a month. The German is still at Dortmund but is being linked with a move away.
Ikay Gundogan: A recent return from a lengthy series of injuries. The German came on as a late sub to no avail
Jakub Blaszczykowski: Still out injured and has yet to feature this season.
Marco Reus: The most frustrating player for Dortmund fans. Fantastic when he plays but the star is once again out injured. Worryingly he is heavily linked with a move away from the club next summer.
Robert Lewandowski: 8 goals and 5 assists this season. Unfortunately they are for Bayern Munich who he signed for on a free in the summer. He has been sorely missed.
